The Feedback Conversation Your Competitors Are Not Having

Most consultancies believe they know what their clients think. After all, they speak every week, they attend progress meetings, and they solve problems together. Therefore, they should know how the relationship is developing.

Unfortunately, familiarity often creates blind spots because project meetings focus on delivery, commercial meetings focus on budgets, and design meetings focus on technical issues.

Almost nobody creates space for a genuine conversation about the client experience itself.

To me, that represents a missed commercial opportunity.

Every client conversation contains intelligence far beyond satisfaction. Things that are said and mentioned about future developments, procurement and organisational changes, future investment and strategic priorities.  Clients often mention these things naturally when someone asks open questions without a sales agenda.

Firms in sectors such as management consulting and legal services have long recognised that systematic client listening creates a competitive advantage. Rather than relying on assumptions, they collect qualitative insight across dozens of relationships, identifying trends before they become problems. Over time, this creates something much more valuable than individual feedback.

It creates Organisational Intelligence.

Businesses begin making decisions based on evidence rather than anecdotes; business development becomes more targeted, and service improvements become more focused.

Most importantly, clients feel genuinely listened to and are more likely to re-engage for the next project.
